Top Secondary Schools in Uganda

Following the release of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results, the next task for students and parents is to find a school with a record of performing well at the next level; Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), the gateway to university and tertiary institutions.

Today, increasingly thoughtful employers require personnel that have relevant job skills and ability to improve the productivity of their companies and enterprises regardless of their academic performance. Nevertheless, academic excellence remains an integral yardstick for possible employment in many institutions.
As such, every student and importantly parents, wish and are always out to take their children to the best performing schools academically.

Some schools; both traditional and new entrants in the education sector, have over a period of time distinguished themselves academically by posting good results both at O-Level and A-level.
Although there are other factors that influence where one takes his child, including discipline, affordability, and accessibility, among others, performance has always been a top consideration for parents.

To help guide parents and students on the best A-Level schools as per their performance in the previous four years and university intake thereafter, a survey conducted spontaneously looks at these schools’ percentage of A scores by all the sitting students in selected years but also the best scores of A to C between 2012 and 2015.

The survey reveals that the best performing schools over the past four years have been consistent.

Predictably, it is these schools that dominate slots during the university intake.
For instance, a look at the public university admission for the 2014/2015 academic year tells the story. Research shows that schools mainly from the central region dominated the year’s government-sponsored admissions to the five public universities of Kyambogo, Makerere, Mbarara, Gulu and Busitema.

Out of the possible 2,471 government admission slots, 625 (25.3 per cent) were shared amongst just seven schools, leaving the rest of the schools across the country to share the remaining.

St Mary’s SS, Kitende took the highest slots with 170 followed by Uganda Martyrs SS, Namugongo at 105 slots while Mengo SS came third with 84 students.

Seeta High School, Mukono got 78, Gombe SS (70), King’s College, Budo (64) while Kawempe Muslim SS took 54 slots.
Other schools with notable performance are from western region, including Ntare School, Bweranyangi Girls SS, Maryhill H/S, Immaculate Heart Girls SS, the north and eastern regions have the least number of schools with top performances.

Still, it is no surprise that some of the best performing A-Level schools always perform well during the O-Level exams.
For example, Mt St Mary’s Namagunga, Kisubi Seminary and Bukalasa Minor Seminary topped in UCE results with all their students passing in division one.

Similarly, St Mary’s SS Kitende, St Lawrence-London College, Uganda Martyrs SS and Bishop Cyprian Kihangire SS, St Joseph’s SS Naggalama and Turkish Light Academy emerged among the top 10 in last year’s UCE exams.
