DPP Orders Probe into Nakuru Dam Tragedy, 40 Still Missing

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet

The DPP has ordered investigations into Thursday’s Nakuru dam tragedy which left over 40 dead, many missing. Noordin Haji, in a letter to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, says the investigation should establish the cause of the disaster and whether anyone was culpable. “The resultant investigation file should be forwarded to my office for perusal and appropriate action within 14 days,” Noordin said

The Patel Dam, located on private farmland in Solai, broke its one-kilometer-long wall and swept hundreds of homes downstream. Government officials, however, projected that the death toll could rise to more than 100. The search operation for 40 missing persons is ongoing

They include children and women trapped in mud and others whose whereabouts could not be established. Statistics released Wednesday showed that more than 220,000 people have been displaced by flooding as heavy rains hit the country.
